Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of positions created to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
