The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
